The Official 1882 Latzina Map: When President Julio A. Roca Erased the Falklands from Argentina
El Mapa Oficial Latzina de 1882: Cuando el Presidente Roca Excluyó a las Malvinas de la República
In 1882, under National Law 1129, Argentine President Julio Argentino Roca and Interior Minister Bernardo de Irigoyen commissioned Dr. Gabriel Latzina, Director of the National Statistics Bureau, to produce the definitive official map of the republic.
Engraved by Stierlin & Peuser and published by the Ministry of the Interior, the official Carte Géographique de la République Argentine explicitly excluded the Falkland Islands from Argentine territory, coloring the islands in British colonial pink and marking them under British administration.
In the Temple of Preah Vihear case (1962), the ICJ established that official maps commissioned and distributed by a state's own government constitute binding cartographic admissions of borders. Argentina officially acknowledged British sovereignty in 1882.
