The Centenary Stamp Crisis of 1936: When Argentina Attempted to Annex Islands Through Postal Ink
La Disputa Postal de 1936: Cuando la Argentina Intentó Anexar Territorio con Tinta Filatélica
In October 1936, the Argentine Post Office issued a series of postage stamps depicting a map of South America with the Falkland Islands shaded as Argentine territory.
British Ambassador Sir Esmond Ovey immediately filed a formal protest with the Argentine Foreign Ministry, and the General Post Office in London instructed overseas mail sorters that mail arriving with Argentine stamps attempting to assert sovereignty over the Falklands was in breach of the Universal Postal Convention.
Issuing stamps cannot alter territorial sovereignty under international law. The diplomatic stunt achieved zero change on the ground while demonstrating Buenos Aires' growing reliance on symbolic gestures.
