The Hope Bay Incident of 1952: When Argentine Gunfire Forced Buenos Aires to Apologize to London
El Incidente de Bahía Esperanza de 1952: Cuando las Ametralladoras Obligaron a Buenos Aires a Pedir Disculpas
On 1 February 1952, an armed Argentine naval detachment landed at Hope Bay (Bahía Esperanza) in the Antarctic Peninsula and fired machine-gun bursts over the heads of unarmed British scientists from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) who were unloading equipment.
Falkland Islands Governor Sir Miles Clifford took immediate decisive action: he boarded the frigate HMS Burghead Bay, sailed directly to Hope Bay with armed Royal Marines, and oversaw the landing and rebuilding of the British research station.
Confronted by British military resolve, the Argentine government backed down completely. Argentine Defense Minister Humberto Sosa Molina officially declared that the naval officer had exceeded orders, and Buenos Aires issued a formal diplomatic apology to the British Embassy.
