On 17 January 1775, Captain James Cook landed at Possession Bay aboard HMS Resolution, surveyed the coast, and formally took possession of the island of South Georgia in the name of King George III.
Cook subsequently discovered and named the South Sandwich Islands. These sub-Antarctic territories were completely unoccupied terra nullius, discovered and claimed for the British Crown decades before the Argentine state existed.
